GoldingWeb Media Web Design Services!

Goldingweb is my homestead on the world wide web. It is not intended as a commercial project, but to be considered simply as a source of help and advice for anyone considering building a commercial website, whilst at the same time serving as a showcase of my work and online projects.

The site also includes No. 50. A private area of the site for my friends and family to use and enjoy. If you feel you would like to access No. 50 then simply Contact Me.

In the meantime, use the links above to navigate between the different sections of the site. Moving your mouse over each link, display's a summary in the infobox. Clicking on that link will load the content in this box.

I hope you enjoy the site, and find the information and tools here fun, informative and useful.

Cheers!

Web Design - Principles & Preferences

As the title suggests, designing a web page depends largely on two key areas. Firstly, the principles we must stick to in order to get our site seen by as many people, using many different operating systems and browsers from all over the world, and secondly preferences, consider the tastes and preferences your client and their target customers, and try to let these very personal ideas and tastes reflect in the way the site both operates, and is presented.

E.Commerce & Dynamic Web Design

Most personal web pages, (and indeed a large number of commercial websites) are static. This means that the pages are coded by hand, along with the content, styles, images and data. However, a little more work in the design and build stage, could save hundreds of programmer hours in the future. How??? Dynamic Web Pages ??? Simply speaking, a Dynamic Web Page does not actually exist untill it is requested. When a page is called, the content can be retrieved from a database, and displayed through the website depending on whatever conditions you, or your user specify. From changing content related to times, days, dates or locality right through to bullet-in board systems, Dynamic Web Pages allow us to store, retrieve and display data quickly and easily.

Another angle on database enabled websites would be E.Commerce systems. Online stores are growing in popularity, and the development involved varies greatly in complexity, features and required ability.

This is where web designing truely becomes web programming

Site Maintainance & Content Management

You have the concept, that great idea, the stunning colour swatches, and a portfolio full of products, descriptions, photographs, contacts, suppliers, mailing lists... and only one member of staff to maintain this. Probably an IT professional, competent in the language of the website, whose time could be far more constructive developing your new projects rather than changing daily news updates, adding new announcements. sending out the mailshot.

It should be the overall goal of any web-designer, create a site that could be maintained and updated by any non-it litterate person.

Using Dynamic Web methods, we can create data generated websites, whose content could be updated by secretaries, mums, grandads or even the kids. The extra development time involved in switching to Data Driven websites is easily outweighed by the IT Programmer hours it saves in the long run.

Search Engine Placement

Search Engines account for over 70% of hits on the web. However for sites that dont appear on the first page of returned search results this figure halves, and halves again for the third page. Very few people will look beyond the 50th returned result from their search... time is precious.

Because of this, search engine submission is becoming a technology in it's self. Understanding the major search engines, and how they work will help in getting those valuable top spots.

From the very first line of code in your website, you need to be aware of techniques and tricks which will increase the visibility of your site to the search engines.
